Baby Massage
Baby massage has been around for many years but
has only become westernised in the last 30 years.
It was founded by Vimala McClure in 1973 while she
was working in an orphanage in India. On her way to the
train station after a tearful good bye, her rickshaw
stopped to let a buffalo cart go by. To her right was a
shanty - just a few boards and a canvas - where a family
lived by the roadside. A young mother sat in the dirt
with her baby across her knees, lovingly massaging him
and singing. As Vimala watched her she remembered there
was so much more to life than material wealth. This lady
had so little, yet she could offer her baby this
beautiful gift of love and security, a gift that would
help to make him a compassionate human being.
She
thought about all the children she had known in the
orphanage and how loving, warm and playful they were in
spite of their so called disadvantages. They took care
of each other and they accepted responsibility without
reservation. She thought they were able to be so loving,
so relaxed and natural because they had been so loved
like this as infants, and infants have been loved like
this in India for so thousands of years.
A seed
was planted in her mind and she returned home with both
joyful anticipation of the future and sadness for what
she had to leave behind. |

Vimala was the first person to put together a
professional program. It's theory, curriculum and focus
are unique, and have been carefully developed and
refined through research and practical experience since
it's introduction in 1976.
I loved the idea of
baby massage. On completion of my training it came clear
to me how important baby massage really is for both
parents and babies as well as our society.
With
this in mind I have set up courses to run at Kiddi Caru
Nurseries, a child friendly clean environment, in
Writtle in Chelmsford as well as Colchester, Essex. The
course runs for 5 weeks and is approximately 1 hour
long. You will learn strokes to massage your baby, learn
the benefits for both parent and baby and be able to
meet other mum's.
Babies from birth to 1 year are
welcome and remember, it's never to late to start
massaging your baby. I also teach massage techniques to
mothers who have premature babies or children with
special needs.
